Ok so I have been slacking and left my 2005 ninja 500 out in the rain a couple of times. The bolts and chain are starting to rust. What are the best things to use to get the rust off? Should I replace the chain?

Spray WD-40 on those things, and wipe them off with a paper towel. Repeat.

Chain: Put the motorcycle on its center stand, give the rear wheel a spin with your hand, and if you see that any of the chain links are "frozen" together, you can try to "exercise" them. If that's a no-go, then you need to replace the chain. As before, wipe 'er off with a paper towel, then apply a heathy dose of chain lube over the entire chain. Note: turn the rear wheel by hand -- do NOT have the engine running; gits who run the engine while wiping the chain lose their fingers.

soak em in Breakfree ( from the gun store) it really does a good job on removing rust. No you don't need to replace the chain unless it is truly frozen. Just remove from bike, soak in breakfree or another penetrating oil for a day, remove, flex it in your hands to make sure each link is lubed and free, then "hang" it to drip for a couple of hours and re install.

Rust remover or chrome polish. Go to any auto parts store or even wal mart and check it out. Use a clean towel and rub away. Then coat the parts in a clear wax to help sustain the shine.

get zero grade steel wool and some wd40. For the chain, it doesn't need to be zero grade, but for chrome, that's what you want. Folks if you give that cheap good solution a neg. you're a loser.

When you're done, give it a good lube job.
