If you don't know anything about explosives, I suggest you find a professional to do it. The money is worth it. Explosives are too sensitive for an amateur to work with. There will also be some laws or ordinances in your area that indicate that you have to use a professional or get a permit.

We had a friend that was an explosive salesman (we lived in a mining area). One day he took us out to show what a small dynamite could do. It was amazing. There was a large rock that he had to blow up and the amount of dynamite he had to use was very surprising. He constantly warned us about the dangers of flying debris, which was something we hadn't thought about.

Get a professional.

I can tell you, but I won't. To have explosives is illegal without the permits. They are dangerous and blast a rock can cause a lot of damage to you and your home.

Try a wedge and hammer. Also a neat little tool, an air hammer works great. You can buy one with the compressor at Wally Word cheaper than the exosive solution.

I look at it now and it is funny. Back then it was not funny. I was messing with black powder, didn't think about the can it came in. The can was empty. I ignited some blackpowder on the ground and the empy can was close by. The can ignited also, blowing a crater in the yard, as well it blew out the windows on the backside of my parents house, and the side windows of my neighbors house. Back then a horse whip or leather belt was the preferred method of child disipline. Must I say more....

The responses are right about explosives. Illegal and dangerous without knowledge, permits and licenses. A very good but slow method is to drill 3/4 inch holes 4-6 inches deep in a line where you would like the rock to break. Fill these holes with water once freezing weather arrives. The swelling of the water as it turns to ice will split the rock very nicely. Good luck!

Unless you want to see the Feds at your door looking very angry and possibly hauling you off, forget it. You can rent a jack hammer and compressor.

Then again you could excavate around the stone and make it a part of the landscape.
