The MVP Award is given to the player, not with the best stats, but to the player considered most valuable to his team. So lets say for example:
This year, Alex Rodriguez is by far having the best season by anyone in baseball. He's most likely going to win the MVP award because even though the Yankees arent playing very well, without him, instead of being 9 games back, they'd probalby be about 16 games back. Making him the most valuable player.

Personally, I think that the MVP award winner should always come from a team who at least made the playoffs. Because if you hit .420 with 63 home runs and 140 rbi's but you play for the Washington Nationals, you're still going to finish in last place, which means that they could've finished in last place without you. I think it is much more valuable for a mediocre to good team to have a good team player who will come through for them in the clutch who you can really say that there is no way their team would've made the playoffs without him

a player who is critical to the success of a successful ballclub. this often transcends statistical representation alone, such as in the NL in 1988 when strawberry probably had the more impressive stats on a division winner than did kirk gibson for a division winner. the writers voted, rightfully so, in my opinon, for gibson despite the statistical differences because he was such a catalyst for his team. i recall seeing one example of this when in the bottom of the ninth of a tie game he scored from SECOND on a wild pitch--a brash ploy that won a game, something darrylberry was not known for ever doing. the writers knew about this fiery style of gibby's, and awarded him the mvp.

The guy who is the most clutch.
To have most game winning hits and RBIs is what makes a player valuable.

It pretty much goes to the player who had the best year stat wise. OR to the player who led his team to the playoffs or just flat out played well that year and helped his team to many victories.

A highly-regarded opinion poll, the contributors to which have vastly misaligned notions of "value" and "drama".
