5-2-3 Double play

The way you have described the play... Legal play in baseball and softball. All this happened as a result of a baserunning mistake that eventually worked out for the offense. Now had there been two outs and the pitch was strike three, the throw to first to retire the batter-runner would be the third out and no run can score. You have the understanding of a forceout correct. Think of it this way: the only place a runner who is forced can be retired without a tag is the next base they can advance to. A runner can never be forced at a base he/she already occupies.

Have to mark the scorebook for 2 of the 3 players involved: the runner on third is scored 5-2, 2nd out.
the batter is scored 5-2-3, 3rd out.
nothing happens to runner on first

Its 5-2 on the runner and the batter is out 2-3 its a 5-2-3 double play. its that simple. For scoring purposes each position is assigned a number as follows:
1.pitcher
2. catcher
3.first base
4.second base
5. third base
6.shortstop
7.left field
8 center field
9.right field
There is no fielder's choice the runner on second is left on base.

The runner from third is out 5-2

The batter is out 5-2-3

I question why, with one out, the third baseman didn't go to second for the 5-4-3 DP.

I also question why, with one out, the runner on third went home on a groundball to third.

Was this a little league game?

5-2 on the runner out at the plate; 5-2-3 on the batter-runner's out at first; FC to account for the stranded runner's presumed advance to second.

There is no force play at first, people.

Give "bassgrandmaster" his 10 points because he is correct. It is a 5-2-3 double play. That would be Third to Home to First.
