First two answers are good - craigs list. Things you cannot sell or you want to give away can be listed on Freecycle.

Here is the link

Oshawa/Whitby Freecycle site

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/freecycleoshawawhitby/

You have to sign-up in order to post a listing.

Remember anything you offer has to be free; no advertising or selling

When posting an item you wish to give away, put
Offer: +description of item in the subject.

When the item(s) have been picked up
re-post with
Taken: +description of item in the subject.

Caution: be careful about having them sent to your E-Mail, you could be flooded unwanted E-Mails it is a very active freecycle site.

Good Luck

Hi. Local papers, flyers posted in supermarkets, libraries etc. work. I personally love www.craigslist.com for selling and purchasing household items. they do have a Canadian site. google base offers free ads, and yahoo classifieds offers free ads.
Good Luck!
