In the bottom right of the screen when I move the cursor over the tiny icon it says as follows;

"Local Area Network
Speed; 100 Mbps
Status connected"

However, if I'm downloading a file or uploading a video on Youtube it downloads at a speed of 15 kilobytes per second. Is this normal or am I missing out on something?

Your missing something.

LAN is local to your building.

Your LAN connects to the Internet through some sort of "WAN" (wide area connection). This WAN connection is typically much slower than the LAN connection. DSL is an example of a WAN technology (a.k.a. broadband) which has a maximum download speed between 750Kbps and 8Mbps depending the service level your paying for.

Your download speed is limited by the WAN bandwidth (weakest link) in addition there is overhead associated with the protocols used to transfer files across the Internet which can account for up 40% of the lost bandwidth.

That is merely the speed that your Network Interface Card (NIC) is connected at. If you had another system connected to the same switch (or together with a crossover) then theoretically they would communicate at this speed (it is theoretical because there are a host of processes which slow it down somewhat). Your Internet connection speed is actually determined by your provider - what are you paying for? For example, at my home, I pay for 128Kbps upstream (like when I upload videos) and 1500Kbps downstream (like when I download videos) - these are again theoretical numbers, there will be some overhead associated, but you should get close to that.

Hope this helps you some.

Your LAN is strictly "in house" and the upload/download speeds will depend on both your Internet connection and the other ends connection + traffic. If you have adsl your upload will be allot less than you download speeds.
go to www.speakeasy.net/speedtest and see what your upload tests out at.
