I'd start by figuring out your intended uses of the laptop: word processing, email, browsing the web, music, photos, etc. Based upon the applications you plan on using you can get an idea of the hardware and software needed by check out the minimum systems requirements.
Next decided the needed feature set: size, weight, battery life, screen size, media needed (CD, DVD, DvD-RW, ), etc.
Then decide what type laptop would work best for you ...
Ultraportable, Thin-and-light, Mainstream, Desktop replacement/gaming laptops and Budget laptops.
Then decide how much you want to spend.
IBM, Dell, Toshiba, HP and Acer are the largest laptop vendors with the best support in place and make the most models. Pick two and compare their models that meet your needs.

A decent laptop would cost around $1200.
A descent laptop shouldn't cost much, I'd assume it's been dropped and heading downhill.

that's not a foul cost yet Dell often has bargains on workstation so in case you save an eye fixed on them you would be able to get the comparable workstation for greater inexpensive. one component i might exchange if I have been you is the working gadget. are not getting Vista yet, it is not ok till they pop out with the 1st provider %.. Plus at 1GB of ram you will see Vista runs very slow. I even have 2GB of ram and vista nevertheless had overall performance issues. it relatively is a genuine hog. swap the OS to XP if it permit you to. If not you may attempt dealing with there company area which i think of allows you to place XP on any of there computers.

You can get a basic one on sale for as low as $400 but for a top core 2 duo CPU and NV 8600 graphic card it would run at least $1200.
