Does anyone actually know of anybody who's been searched and hurt or anything because they put enough information about themselves on the Internet? I've heard stories and recieved chain letters about it, but I've never actually heard of anybody in real life that's had it happen. I run track and they post results on the Internet from the track meets and on the results you can find out my name, age, and where I live. Is that dangerous to have that information about me on there? I can't really control that though, because I'm not going to quit track!

well, usually the only ppl that look up the results r just normal track ppl... and no matter what you do, they won't cut down on your information they put, b/c they put every1's name and results on there, they wont change it.. but i live in the smallest town in the world, and it would prolly be kinda hard for stalkers to find my town at all..and my profile on the internet is private, and i only add people i actually know, i dont add random ppl, just my friends..so am i ok? i dont post my address, phone #, or town or anything.. and nobody would prolly even be able to find my town...it's so small, when you go to my state in an atlas, my town isn't even on the map!!

Well, do you? Or if their personality is different online vs. offline? Yeah. And most people, I believe their real personality is different from their offline personality Would you want to know? Or would that make you look at them differently? I just wanna know about them, name isn't important. After knowing the person it'd influence my initial conceptions of course How about yourself? Would people look at you differently if they met you in real life? Yeah, I'm sure people will think of me differently. I'm not what I seem... hahaa Oh right..er anime related question: Have you ever watched an anime you thought you'd hate, but found out you actually loved/liked? Er, let's see... The Cat Returns. It was surprisingly good though not my kinda anime genre

I work in IT security and I've seen many instances of this in real life. I've seen cyber stalkers, obsessive ex's who tracked people down, scam artists who prey upon people who freely give out their personal info.

The worst thing I've witnessed was a guy who worked for a company I was employeed by. We got a court order to freeze all of his personal information on his computer and on our network.
Our HR department requested I search his computer for any violations of company policy. Apparently they knew why the guy was being investigated and were basically looking for any reason to fire the guy because they knew things were about to get ugly.

What I found sickened me. He had met a 15 year old boy on a chat website. Anyway he found out some personal things about the boy from info he had posted on websites. He used this information to talk the boy into meeting up with him at a local park. I'm sure you can imagine where the story goes from there.

Anyway the boy has probably spent several years in therapy since then and the man is currently serving the 3rd or 4th year of his prison sentence right now. I like to think that is at least some part due to the information I gathered on him and turned over to investigators.

Never, and I mean never give out your real information on the internet! (Unless, it is 100% Verizon checked!); (the site is fallible!); but otherwise; if perse; you give out your information without necessity; than you could be in for the shock of your life! And, I mean, SPAM AND ADWARE; 24 hour seven! So, if you do receive these threats- just make sure your pop-up blocker is functional- and you have the latest Internet Virus protectors and Spam Guards; and then you should be all set!

NEVER, I repeat NEVER, EVER give out personal info on the computer...not even what school you go to (pervs have a way of finding you with just that info!)...
I agree that you should not quit track...(I ran track myself in high school...back in the "olden days"..)BUT, I would suggest your coach REFRAIN from putting your info on-line...no matter how "innocent" it may appear.....If you were my daughter, the coach and I would be having a talk, TODAY.

Yep, I know a jr. high age girl that was raped. Not lying.

She was a real smart, hip, popular girl. She agreed to meet someone that was her "friend" online. So, she was stupid in that regard. If she hadn't agreed to meet I have strong suspicion that the perp would have tracked her down anyway.

i dont know anyone personally .... i dont see a problem giving out your age, if your from england or usa or whatever, etc ...i think it would be hard for someone to search the whole of one town for a 16yr old female called Beth...you know??? (unless they know a way of getting your IP so they can see your exact address)....... but definatly dont give out phone numbers or addresses....
