I was in 'Color Guard' in High School. All 10 of us would menstruate at the same time!
It's not proven, but 'pheromones' ("chemical substances secreted by animals that convey information to, and produce specific responces in, members of the same species") seem to play a huge role as to why this happens. Some studies suggest that natural body odor synchronized women's menstrual cycles: In one study, "women were regularly smeared under the nose with sweat collected from the underarms of other women began to have mentrual cycles that coincided with those of sweat donors."
Like I said, it's not proven, but this is the best answer that scientists can come up with right now.

I remember reading a study about this years ago. They took one woman from a group, collected perspiration from her (you don't want to know how), and transferred it to the other women; other than that, the first woman had no contact whatsoever with the remainder of the women. Their cycles all synched up pretty quickly, although I don't recall the exact period of time - not more than a couple of months, though. The sweat contains something - probably hormones - that acted on the other women to keep their cycles together. The theory as to WHY this is an advantage is that if several women became pregnant at the same time, then there's a good chance that at least ONE of them will be able to produce milk, and thus all the offspring have a better chance of survival.

It goes back to the days when humans lived in clans and small villages. People used to think the moon had something to do with it. Think about it. You live in a close-knit community and every time there is a new moon all the women are menstruating. What’s up with that?
It’s because of competition for males. If you are a woman of breeding age and there are only a few males to breed with, well you don’t want to be the only one on the rag. Jeannie can’t have my man just cause it ain’t her time of the month. She go’n be moody just like the rest of us.

I have a couple of friends who practically spend every waking moment together (very annoying) and they have their period at the same time for usually the same amount of time. It's weird how that happens, and I've never understood why. It's weird though, because my sister and I lived together for a long time until she moved out and we never had our period the same time. Good thing, I guess.

I had read an article somewhere that your sense of smell can pick up on some type of hormone or pheremone from the other females that you are around a lot. You don't notice that you are able to smell them, but that's what brings your cycles closer together.

I hear that it is true. If you live with someone or work with them you will eventually get your period at the same time. I heard that, although I have no clue why it is...

YES!! The more time spent together and more products (lipstick, hairspray, perfumes) used together can contribute to the cycles coinciding with each other.
