Possibly within the next 10 years, i know it's a long time but i'd really like to do it. I'd like to have some advice off of people who have their own aquarium shop. Thanks

The first step will be to complete a business plan. This document should outline your expected costs and income for the next 3 years and detail your expertise and experience in running a business as well as your knowledge of fish that would be needed to run a successful fish store. This is what you use to convince the bank to loan you the required money as well as make sure such a business is right for you and will actually make a profit.

Once you have gotten a loan for the needed money, you will need a location, equipment, staff, insurance, utility accounts, wholesale purchasing accounts with various wholesale outlets in your area as well as nationwide and so many other things they would fill books to list them.

If you are looking at 10 years from now, the first thing you need to do is get a college degree. Any degree will be ok, but a business degree would be best, maybe with a minor in biology, just to look good. It will also help you very much to have held a job in a management position and you will need to have saved about 25% orf the money you need to open the doors of your new shop. All of those things will not only prepare you to run a business, but help convince the bank you know what you are doing.

location is SOOOO important!!!!
and make sure you fine a reputable dealer and a good selection of fish, some want little tertas and stuff some want huge fish try to appeal to the regulars more than what most people are doing (like the local favorites rather than the national craze) also don't be afraid to special order for people and to hire a (somewhat) knowlegable staff.
i really don't know the specifics of running a bussiness but i know what i like in a LFS (local fish store)
