Try sprinkling some cayenne pepper all over the grass. It will not hurt the grass, but the cats will not like digging in the dirt. If you have dogs, they will not like it either.

i work in petsmart, and i have seen some little green crystals you sprinkle around that keep cats and dogs away.
check in your local petsmart or petco, and look in the outdoor clean up section.
there is also a little alarm thing you can get.. its ultra sonic, so people cant hear it. its around $50... but there are also lots of sprays and such you can get for cheaper.

There is a product called "shake-away" made from the urine of predatory animals. It claims to be safe for plants, pets, and children. Here is one of many sites that sell it.

pine cones put behind the bushes works too. They can't find a nice place to walk to squat.

there is stuff u can buy that is based on lion urine. This scares the willies out of the cats in our ares. You can't smell it but the cats certainly can!!!!!
