I have all and use all. The circular saw is for cutting boards and plywood.

The jigsaw has a lot of puposes. It can be used on almost any wood or metal. You will need to buy more blades for each purpose.

The hack saw is more of a portable saw for cutting metal, small boards, and pipes.

The scroll saw is for cutting patterns and smaller fine line projects. Like cutting sharp curves and art projects.

In most cases my Jigsaw can do most of all the work the rest do with the correct blade. It will cut curves and more.

The circular saw has replacement blades and can also cut metal, it is good for most straight line cuts.

Here are the use for the different saws:

1. A handheld circular saw is most commonly used to refer to a hand-held electric circular saw designed for cutting wood, which may be used less optimally for cutting other materials with the exchange of specific blades. Circular saws can be either left or right handed, depending on which side of the blade the motor sits.

2. A Jigsaw is an electrically powered saw having a narrow blade which moves with a reciprocating motion, in a vertical direction, through the surface of a table on which work is placed; esp. used for cutting curves and ornamental patterns.

3. A hack saw is a saw having a blade (typically fine-toothed) which is supported in an adjustable metal frame; used for cutting metals.

4. handheld scroll saw is a hand or power saw with a narrow ribbonlike blade for cutting curved or irregular shapes.

Any of various tools, either hand-operated or power-driven, having a thin metal blade or disk with a sharp, usually toothed edge, used for cutting wood, metal, or other hard materials.

A hand-held circular saw is basically a rough carpentry tool; the saw of choice for framers. It is used for cross-cutting dimensional lumber, manufactured beams and floor joists, and plywood or OSB. On the rare occasion, it will be used to rip-cut dimensional lumber. Blades can be easily changed to accommodate different cutting needs, which allows it to be occasionally used to cut materials other than wood. Though a skilled craftsman can produce some fine cuts with a circular saw, the final results are usually rough. Fine quality rip-cuts require a table-saw and accurate cross-cut and mitre cuts are best achieved using a compound-mitre saw.

A jigsaw is a hand-held saw generally used in finishing work. It's main use is for cutting holes and openings in finished woods and laminates. The saw blade is generally thin and only a few inches in length, with numerous teeth, reducing the peripheral damage which occurs in cutting wood.

A hack-saw is an old-fashioned manual saw designed to cut numerous materials; its primary use is in the plumbing and electrical trades for cutting tubing and conduit pipe. The mechanized equivalent would be a reciprocating saw or Sawz-All.

All scroll saws are basically used in finishing work and cabinetry, particularly in detailed customized work. The hand-held version is just easier to manipulate and can be used to make alterations on material already secured into place.

Other saws which your husband may accumulate include:

table saw
compound mitre saw
radial arm saw
band saw
reciprocating saw
stationary scroll saw

Definitions:

Rip Cuts: Parallel Cuts which follow the grain of the wood.
Cross Cuts: Cuts which are perpendicular to the wood's grain.

A hand held circular saw is typically used to cut off long pieces of wood and occasionally to slice a piece of wood lengthwise (although that is tricky to do well - table saw would be preferred).

Jig saw is used to cut an opening (like for a sink cutout) from the middle of a large flat surface. Using it for cutoff is not very good because it is hard to keep it moving straight.

Hack saw is used to cut metal (pipes, brackets, bolts) with a finer tooth blade used for thinner items and a coarser tooth blade used for thick metal [fine and coarse indicate teeth per inch].

Scroll saws are used to carefully cut curved designs in thin wood sheets.

Does that give you any project thoughts?

circular saw is used (depending upon which blade you use) for crosscutting lumber and
cutting plywood it can also be fitted with masonry blades, for cement concrete and tile*
and metal cutting blades for metal wall studs and pipe*
*these are NOT recommended due to safety concerns

Jigsaw cuts curves in wood plastic or metal

hacksaw is for cutting metals and some plastics depending on the blade

Tubing and pipes should be cut with a pipe cutter

some Jigsaws sold as a scroll saw because they have a pivoting blade chuck which allows the user to change the direction of the cut without removing it from the material

Circular saw is for straight cutting wood either across grain or with it.
Jigsaws make curved cuts in wood plastic or metal.
Hacksaw is usually used to cut metal bars or bolts. Not too good for sheet metal though.
Scroll saws are to make curved or straight cuts. You can take the blade out easily and put it through a hole on the wood or plastic or metal and cut out shapes from wood. You could make a one piece frame for pictures etc.
Look up "intarsia" on the internet.

Circular saw: Cutting off lumber such as 2x4's or long cuts on panels or plywood.
Jigsaw: making curved cuts in wood.
Hacksaw: Used for cutting metal. Also for cutting metal tubing or pipe.
Never heard of a handheld scrollsaw. Scrollsaws are usually a benchtop tool for cutting intricate curves in wood.
