Check to see if your belt is broken; if you have an empty bag (so it is picking up dirt, not just rearranging it) and be sure the tube from the brush to the bag is clear, and be sure your brush isn*t full of hair etc.
After you do all these things your vac should work like it is supposed to.
Also make sure your belt isn*t stretched out of shape and is turning the brush the way it should. If your belt is on backwards, it won*t be picking up. Hope this helps.

If after changing the vacuum bag and making sure you have no clogs still smells dusty, my best guess is you'll definitely need a new, more powerful vacuum cleaner, capable of really "eating" the dust, not only moving it around into the air.

If it has a bag in it, check it to see if it's full or maybe has a hole in it. Then, check aroung for a filter over the area where the air comes out. That filter can be cleaned, even if it is paper-like. Let it completely dry and put back in the vac. Then, vacuum to see if it still smells. If it still smells, you may need a new vac or have to have it worked on.

Change your vacuum bag. If you have a bag less vacuum, then change the filter on the vacuum. You can also buy vacuum bags that have a scent built into them, or are lined with carbon to prevent smells.

Change your vacuum bags more often or get a stronger vacuum, use carpet refresher before you vacuum, I recently bought a Kirby and the difference between it and my old Eureka is like night and day, a stronger vacuum makes a big difference

Make sure the bag is empty. Make sure filters are clean and the interior of the vacuum is clean. It sound like the machine is kicking up dust and blowing it out somewhere.

Sounds like your vaccuum has a filter that needs cleaned or replaced and if it doesn't have filters sounds like it is time for a new vacuum cleaner.

Clean your vaccum like everyone else suggest but try using a fragrance on carpet. The kind you put on on leave on for a few minutes that powder. But since you have a pet they have a kind that you can spray on carpet and it dissolves in the carpet and completely pet safe.. Try that..
