Good question.

Right up there with why do millions vote for the next American Idol, but only a fraction of those people vote in elections.

That is faulty logic.

The comparison with the 50 contests for Miss USA would be more like the British Parliament where the Prime Minister is elected from the House of Commons.

Actually we choose several people to run against each other for President, as many as there are political parties. The only reason you only see 2 is because the Main Stream Medial only covers the Democrats and Republicans.

We don't, it's just an established and expected convention. In all reality, there usually are about 50 presidential candidates, but the lesser known ones rarely get 1% of the vote in total and aren't well known because they can't afford to campaign.

There are 2 major political parties and 50 states. Do you see the pattern?

The difference and level of importance between the presidential election and "Miss USA" is too drastic and inconceivable for description. What kind of comparison is this?

There are more than two. It's just that the others are never noticed.

Take Ralphy for example.
