First off go to your local auto parts store and ask them for a Thermostat for a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am and them them the engine size etc and other related information they ask. then when you are ready.

The thermostat should be on the front of the engine on the driver side. Follow the upper radiator hose to the block and where it attachers is where the thermostat is located. To get to it you will have remove an assortment of parts.

be sure the engine is cold when you do this as you don't want to get burned by the hot fluids,

place a bucket under the front to catch what little fluid you might loose as it it toxic to dogs, and other animals,

remove the upper radiator hose from where it attachers to the block and then remove the Thermostat cover. pay close attention to the way the old thermostat is installed.

remove the old thermostat replace the cover, and the hose, and any other parts you have removed, check the level of fluid in the radiator . and check for leaks and you should be all set.
Good luck.

At the top of your radiator is the upper radiator hose. Follow that to where it goes into the engine. There will be a small housing bolted to the engine. Inside the housing is the thermostat. You have to take the hose off the housing, so either drain the radiator a bit or let the coolant run all over the engine. Some coolant will still come out when you take off the hose and when you take off the housing. Unbolt the housing, note the position of the thermostat (which way it's pointing), take it out, put new one in, replace gasket on housing (often skipped, not recommended to skip), rebolt housing to engine, replace radiator hose, top off coolant. Start the car, run to operating temperature, check for leaks.

Follow top radiator hose to engine.Take off two nuts.Remove old thermos stat.Scrape off old gasket.Put in new stat.with new gasket.Tighten nuts carefully.Don't over tighten them.Kinda easy if you take your time. Some are hard to get to.Especially if your engine is a 3.1 V6.Good luck.
