Reset the router - by pressing the switch at the back located through a hole in the back. Then from your browser type http://192.168.0.1 and that should get you in to the router. You'll find a list of menus. Find the bit that asks for a passphrase and type in a short string and choose WEP and that will give you a wep key. If you set the ID of the router to something you will recognise that will help you know which is yours. You will be asked for the WEP key when you try to connect. Later you can go to WPA if you want more security. The login and password is usually on the bottom of the router. Usually the default is admin for log in and password for password. you can change those once you're in. Also on some routers have it email you once a week - and send it's log. If there is a wizard to detect your ISP's server settings - usually at the top of the menus - use that. Good luck!

There's far too much to list here, but here are some of the basic things you should do (Details vary with brand of router):

1.Turn on WEP (802.11B/G networks) or WPA (802.11G networks) encryption.
2.Turn off SSID beacon (broadcasting). You're not running a WiFi hotspot; all your computers should know the network name.
3.Change the SSID (network name) from the factory default.
4.Change the router administrator password.
5.Disable wireless access to your router's admin pages. Leave admin access for wired machines only. You don't have to keep one machine ON a wire, just leave a wire hanging from the router and connect to it when you need access to the admin pages.
6.Reduce the number of DHCP (automatic IP addressing) addresses in the router to the number of computers you have and no more.
