The Mazda 3 is built and imported from Hiroshima Japan and the Mazda 6 is built in Flat Rock MI. Real Japanese cars last longer, have a better fit and finish, and have better re-sale value than American built vehicles.
Performance will be close to the same due to the Mazda 6 having slightly more torque than the Mazda 3 but it is heavier. The 6 is a mid size sedan and the Mazda 3 is a compact class vehicle. Do you want more room (Mazda 6) or do you want a vehicle that is really easy to drive, park, and run around in (Mazda 3)?
The Mazda 6 has rebates on it and you might get more car for the money depending on the options you want. Do a list of pro's and con's and see which one fits your needs the most.

I actually had this same debate several months ago. The 3 is a bit smaller than the 6. My bf works as a tech at a Mazda dealership and said that he constantly gets Mazda 6's in with problems (the cars do not have that many miles on them either). The Mazda 6 has had multiple recalls, including on the transmission. The Mazda 3 is a more reliable car. It also has had super high ratings from Consumer Reports and various car magazine (Car and Driver, etc). I sat in both and drove both. The Mazda 3 is more comfortable, looks better both inside and out and rides a lot smoother. I also like having the comfort of knowing that I have a good and reliable car, which the 6 is not.

I have a Mazda 3 and absolutely love it!!! After i bought it i took it to a mechanic and found out it had been in an accident... the carfax was clean, but i should have taken it to a mechanic before i bought it... anyways, even with the accident the car drives amazing. The 3 definitely looks better on the outside than the 6. If your a guy tho most people say the mazda 3 looks like a chick car. the 3 also has pretty good gas mileage... i travel from miami to orlando a lot (3 1/2 hour drive) and i can get there with a little less than a half a tank.

I have a Mazda6. When I decided I wanted a new car I was deciding between a 3 or 6 also. I was having a had time deciding until I test drove them both. They both drove great, but in the 3 I felt like I was in a small box. There wasn't a lot of room. I'm not a big person and I still felt that way. The 6 seemed to be more roomy and comes with more interior and exterior options. I have two children so the 6 was the better choice for me. The 6 gave me the whole package in a car. Sporty and roomy enough for kids. I always get compliments on it. I really enjoy my Mazda 6.

My Mazda 6 was built in Hofu Japan. The build quality is top notch. I also owned an Amercan made 6 and found nothing wrong with the build.
Basically, the regular Mazda 6 is a great car to compare to an Accord or Camry, though it is a tad underpowered until the 3.5 liter engine is available, its handling is incredible for a stock FWD sedan. If you need a mid sized sedan that isn't boring to drive, the 6 is what you want and that's its mission and it fulfills it perfectly.
I have a modified (3" single exhaust, test pipe, hybrid bov, big TMIC, CAI, engine mount, clutch adjustment, etc..) Speed6 which is completely different, but it is a great AWD mid sized sports sedan that can be easily modified and tuned to 350+ HP and 450 lb torque on the stock internals, tranny, and turbo - and much more with a big turbo.
I think it just comes down to what size car you want, and you will probably answer your own questions when you test drive both cars. The 3 is a very nifty little car, but it just looks dinky and has a cramped cabin and rear seat to me. I dislike the look of a car that is slim, not wide at all. The 6 is NOT a huge car at all, it could be wider, though it seems fairly long... but it is much bigger and wider than the 3. To me it is the difference between a compact and a normal car.

Really their is no comparison between the two. One is a family car (6), the other is a single person or a couple's car (3). Two entirely different missions. Personally, I do not like the fit and finish of the 6 as compared to the 3. The lines on the 3 are taut, tight and athletic sitting on 18" wheels. It fits neatly in tight parking spaces and is just frugal enough to eek out decent gas mileage.
The compromises on the 3 does not dilute a pure driving sports car that happens to be a hatch or 4 door sedan. The 6 is a stretch in every way. It is longer and capable, but so what? The interior is roomy and more generous for taller riders, but who will be in the car the majority of the time? In the 3, unless, the rider is 7 foot, he will be wedged on the passenger side or not fit on the driver's side.
It seems to me the goal of driving a Mazda is to pursue the purist's driving experience. Mazda comes closest to achieving that goal by building competent small cars. This is the Mazda legacy. The 3 is no Mx5, and the 6 will never win the acclaim of being a driver's car, like the Rx8. A Mazda 3 can be suited up to give you the practicality of a sedan or hatch, and still deliver the enthusiast's driving experience in a more deliberate package. For this reason, I would say the properly equipped Mazda 3 is the winner in my book.

The Mazda 3 has better depreciation values and the engine and transmission are better. The Ford produced 3.0 V6 engine on the 6 is just ok and not very refined. However, the 6 has more room, better interior, and better looks. Both have mediocre stock radios in their respective class unless you fork out a few hundreds to upgrade.

The manual 2014 GT Mazda 3 has the 40MPG I want on the highway, a sporty responsive ride and a VERY nicely tuned fuel intake that provides the *type* of acceleration you d find in a turbo, but w/out that awful lower MPG. The Hyundai Veloster manual doesn t come close to this ride and I would say this is the nicest rice-grinder manual in the last 10 years in this price range/class of car and I ve test driven (to buy) a lot of them.
