The Boston Red Sox are the 2004 World Champions. Yes they can play. Right now they are 9 games in first place.
They wear red sox when they play. Where the origional significance comes from, I do not know.

They got their name from the color fo the socks they wore when the Boston Baseball Club first started out. Same thing with the White Sox.
