The bike has not been started for a long time until today, it will bump start in 2nd gear, but it wont start off the starter button. Instead it makes a very fast ticking noise, which is comming from the solinoid starter relay......is this because the relay is broken, or could it be that the relay is making this noise because of something more serious, like the starter motor itself being seized?? Other than this the bike is fine, and the battery is fully charged, any suggestions??

put the bike in gear and rock it backwards and forwards. This will unstick a starter motor. Have the battery charge checked at a bike shop. just because its reading a decent voltage does not mean it has the power to turn the starter.

failing that the starter solinoid may indeed be faulty but if it wasnt working you wouldnt even get that ticking.

sounds like the starter solenoid. it is molded into a black rubber housing which mounts up under the frame right behind the gas tank. you can wiggle it down, unclip the wiring harness, replace it, and then wiggle it back on.

the last time I did one was in '03, I am pretty sure the part was $55, and the local Duc dealership had one in stock. I thinks it's a reasonably common problem

A clicking starter solenoid is a sign that it is bad and needs replacing.
To check the starter motor and battery:
Touch both terminals of the starter solenoid at the same time with a large screw driver (careful of sparks).
If the starter motor turns, change the solenoid.
