Well, I always wanted to be retired so I could spend my time on whatever I considered important instead what had to be done to make a living and so on. And I did retire before I was 50 and pottered along with lots of Green causes and political pursuits. I did envisage spending most of my time writing, on a farm and therefor living amongst mountains with close access to the sea, and sailing with a real ocean yacht, and I did all the above. But all things pass. Life happens while we're making other plans. Cancer cut my capers some years ago. So now I live on a hill in a suburban cul-de-sac with the country and city both close but the sea far away, and my last boat's for sale because I haven't been seaworthy for a couple of years. And this is not where I planned to be - but I am content. Astonishingly, I did have most of what I ever wanted, at least for a time. Few have that. So I count myself as amazingly lucky to have whatever I had, to lose - and still be independent, with time and means to play, at least a little..

You know that is a question that would make me, think hard. But no, I do not think that I had imagined myself the way I am right now. Coming from an abusive Family, the only thing I remember when I was a Child was not to make my Mother angry, or make any noise, or I would be whipped. I only remember that when I was young let's say about 10 years old, I would talk to myself and say that when I was grown up, and Married, I would be the best Darn Mother any kid would ever had, I would scold or spank my kids when it was something big they did, but other than that they had a lot of Loving, and comfort when needed as they grew up. I guess that I envisioned myself, as a caring and Loving Mother, which I did not have.

As a child I thought as a child does. As a grown up, I find that reality often is considerably less than the "imagination" of the child. That being said, I imagined myself to be of good cheer, good heart, and as loving as possible through hard times as well as the good times. I have had both and most likely will experience even more and at this point in my life I am happy with the person I am, except for one thing, my waist size....used to be 21, now it is 29. I never imagine the body changing so........LOL

Actually when I was a child, I wanted to become President of the United States. I saw too many shattered dreams in my family, and among my community, and I wanted to make politics an honorable and "a nobel calling", as President Kennedy once said. I used to write my own speeches and stand in front of the bathroom mirror to deliver them. I would even give speeches to my dog. I ran for every office in school, losing some, winning some. I actually have been a community organizer, have worked in charities, coaches childrens' programs, worked with the Red Cross as a neighborhood programs' coordinator, and most recently was a member of the Monroe County, New York Democratic Party Committee, and did get to attend 3 presidential inaugurals, but I never made it to the point of raising my hand to take the oath of office. And that's OK. I love my fellow man, I live, I love, I laugh.

Yes ... in a way.
When I was about 5 I remember telling my dad that I didn't think I'd ever be a grown-up.
He was confused. "Why not?" he asked me. "When you're 18, you're a legal adult in the state of Louisiana."
But that wasn't what I meant. I meant that I couldn't imagine the ME that was 5 yrs old in an adult body.
And I was right. 5 yr old Jon isn't the same Jon that is typing these words right now. He essentially had to die so that I could be born.
Sure, there's bits and pieces of him left in me. But not a lot.
So my prediction came true: that 5 yr old didn't make it to adulthood. He couldn't. The child has to go away so that the adult can come into being.
Remember Wordsworth saying that "the child is the father of the man"? I guess that's what I'm getting at.

As far as a career goes, I am not at all what I thought I would be. I always dreamed about being a person who was very public and someone who was very present in a child's life, like a doctor or a teacher. I was unaware of the business world so I would have never thought to go into business. As I got older, I became more aware of other public figures like politicians and actors, so those became my goals.

Not really. Though I've worked on Broadway a few times [no fun, by the way], I never became a star and won a Tony Award.
But I'm hardly disappointed. I work regularly in the arts, which qualifies me as a success considering unemployment is the norm for most people in that profession. I don't have a Tony Award, but I own a very nice house.

I went through so many different phases.
The more I grew to understand the world, the more my goals or depictions of the future changed.
I am not one to hold onto a childhood dream as though it is destiny and wilt if my life turns out differently. I see some ambitions early on as wild and childish. I know myself and I know the world so much better now that I can even things out and make an informed decision based in reality.
Some of my aspirations I'm glad didn't pan out.
