militarily... if we stopped funding it's growth today it would probably be a minimum of 30 years till a nation caught up.
monetarily the Euro is more valuable than the dollar and China will soon be more powerful than us as well.
influence... that's harder to say.. we have burned some credibility in the past few years.. but the westernized world is pretty forgiving of such things.. and our relations with China aren't that bad... we'll stay in the top of the mix.
We'll still be a super power.. we just may not be the only one anymore a few decades from now.
there are too many variables to say if we will be safe or not.

I don't believe that we are safe now. This idea that terrorists cannot strike us at any time because we are fighting them in Iraq and Afghanistan is just ludicrous, but I guess some people have a deep need to convince themselves otherwise. So the answer to your first question is no, security is an illusion. As for your second question. I believe that all great nations are destined to fall. So it has been throughout recorded history and so it shall be in the future. Our greatest failing as human beings is that we do not learn from history and as such we are always doomed to repeat the mistakes.

That depends on if we get serious about our border situation. If it doesn't change, no, we will not be safer. The health of our economy probably would be the largest contributor to superpower status.

imo the problem is we are constantly conditioned to feel like we are in a perpetual state of danger ... like the latest news that alqeada in iraq is a threat to the us homeland to me is ludicrous when no citizen in iraq could possibly hope to imigrate or visit here ...
