Clematis come in several groups based on their pruning needs. All three groups are generally perennial in zones 5-8
However plants can be found perennial to zone 3.
This site lists clematis by zone

Catergory I are not pruned
Cat II early/mid season large flower types that require light pruning only.
Cat III are herbaeous or non climbing as well as large flowered, and autumn blooming small flowered varieties that must be hard pruned.
In cat I are several genus including alpina, armandii, macropetala, and montana. Since these are unpruned and both cirrohosa and armandii are evergreen this is sometimes what is being referred to as the hardier clematis. Many of these plants are zone 3 hardy.
Cat II includes only large flowered cultivars. When most people speak of clematis these are the ones they usually mean because they have such glorious blossoms. The majority are zone 5-8, although there are some perennial to zone 3.
Cat II includes my favorite group the viticellas. These are typical from zone 6-9. These can be pruned right down to keep small or allowed to climb to full height. They can be showy like Clematis 'Purpurea Plena Elegans' and cold hardy to zone 3

I like GreenGirl's answer, and I will add my two cents to it. Most perennials bloom for about a month. I am in Zone 5 First through last for flowering: Crocus Botanical tulip Daffodils - Naturalize well and last for years Tulips Iris Oriental Poppies Phlox Peonies Clematis Coreopsis - Lots of varieties - I love the delicate "Moonbeam" Roses Hosta - more known for its leaves but the flowers are pretty too. Some of the white flowered ones are deliciously fragrant. Purple Coneflower - Very hardy and long blooming Black-eyed Susan - Very hardy and long blooming Delphinium Hollyhock Day Lily Gladiolus (annual or tender perennial) Sedum Have fun :)

I'm not sure which zone you are in, but probably the most common perennial, here in Minnesota, that re-blooms is the Stella De Oro Day lily. Another one is Lamb's Ear. There are also a couple of variaties of perennial Geraniums that will re-bloom thoughout the year, although the flowers are not as brilliant as the annual Geraniums.
