I have a group of small creatures with white oval shaped bodies and six black legs. They are so small that I think they could be the larvae stage of an insect. I would like to know what they are, and whether or not they will harm my garden.

Dreadful, horrible, things. Completely killed off my pumpkins and watermelon last year. Anyhow, see if these are your guys. If so, take immediate action. Start picking now because adult squash bugs are almost impossible to kill with poisions which are bad for the beneficial insects as well.
Pick and squish or pick and drown in a pail of soapy water.

It is very possible that they are squash bugs. They are often whitish before they develop a hard blackish exoskeleton. The brand "Bayer" makes a powder insecticide that works fairly well to control them. Of course if you find leaves with large populations on them, it is best to cut of the leaf and remove it from the area. You can stomp on them or throw it away. They are nasty things and can easily devastate a crop. Here is a really good resource for all garden pest questions, and the specific page for squash: http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/GARDEN/VEGES/squash.html There are pictures of the insects and control measures that can be very helpful. Good luck!
