do you like this poem?

what is love for?
it shines brighter than the sun,
it comes through all of the storms,
when you think the couds will never break,
it heals your soul when you are weak,
it makes your life way less bleak,
whenever it has done you wrong,
it comes knocking at your door,
to ask if it could have the chance,
to have you in its arms once more,
this is what love is for.

It's fine. Maybe decide if you want to rhyme or not, and then be consistent. That would improve it.

I like the concept, but the poem itself is a little weak. Lines like "makes your life way less bleak"...are not good ones (way less bleak?).

Also, if you're going to use rhyme in a poem, you should try to spread it out and find a pattern that works well with the subject. Your poem doesn't do that very well. You have a few lines rhymed back to back, then a few on alternate lines, and the rest doesn't rhyme at all.

In poetry, probably more than anything else other than a legal document, words matter. Not just what words you use, but how you use them and how they sound next to one another.

The fact that you "want" to write poetry is fantastic...now you need to learn "how". You can read articles on poetry, buy a book on poetry, but one of the best ways to learn poetry is by reading it. Don't just read poems online, they usually aren't very good. Go out and buy a poetry anthology, something that has a selection of poetry from many different poets. This will give you the greatest exposure to what is out there and all the different forms, rhyme patterns, etc. "Then" you can study the specific forms. As you read these poems, try to write your own poem "like" or "in the style of" one of the poems you've read. This is good practice as it is the same as an artist learning different techniques by copying the work of others. In this case, you're not copying the poem, just the style. You'll find over time that you'll find the style that most suits you, or most suits the subject of your poem and your poetry will shine because of it.

Remember, poetry is about communicating an image in your mind not just with words, but with feelings and images created by putting ordinary words together in new ways, using words to play with your ears and opening up what's in your mind to others who have to picture it in theirs.

Take your time, write often, keep your old poems to look at as you get older. And most of all...keep writing!
