The war did not start over nothing. It started because Bush saw Saddam as a brutal man (Butcher of Baghdad anyone?) who was mistreating the country. Did you know that the majority of people in Iraq couldn't use cell phones or the inernet when Saddam ruled? Do you know he had over 200k people killed and over 1 million killed in a senseless war?

The war started so we could get rid of that awful man and set up a democratic nation in the middle of the middle east. The idea was simple, create a prosperous democratic nation and watch it spread to the surround countries. The Bush administration was sure that this would work, but they ignored one factor. HISTORY!

The fact of the matter is, terorrists and islamic extremists stayed out of Iraq only because of Saddam! They feared him, everybody feared him in the middle east. As soon as we took him out it opened the door for insurgents.

Now what you have it different religions fighting against each other for power in the country. They don't accept one another and are not tolerant. It's shiites vs. sunnis vs. kurds vs. etc. etc.

Can you believe that kids over there would play cops vs. robbers, aliens vs. army, and shiites vs. sunnis! It's true, it's in Iraqis blogs, that kids who normally had fun together playing a cops vs. robbers game would switch teams after a round, but when they played a game and called it shiites vs. sunnies they refused to switch and got in a fight (these are KIDS!).

It is going to take a LONG LONG time for people there to learn tolerance. It will take less time when the islamic extremists who encourage the violence and mistreatment of other religions are defeated. There are a lot of tolerant people there, and with the right conditions and government it will only grow with generations.

But right now many insurgent groups control what the people need, power, food, water, oil etc. So people HAVE to follow them and take orders from them if they want to survive.

We can't just leave these people, we caused this. Taking out Saddam opened the flood gates and pulling out now would only further tarnish our reputation around the world. We have to keep some amount of troops there, wether it just be to train Iraqis or secure the border or whatever. We can't abandon them because the country will either break out in civil war, or be taken over by iran or any of a hundred different possiblities that are all terrible.

That's why the war isn't ending.

This war should have ended, if only the Generals would have been listined to. General Shinseki knew what could happen but he was fired by the most incompatent Secrtary of Defense in History. Rumsfield then made the call to go in with to few troops at the start. This action made Rumsfield the hero of the insurgency as his actions did more to aid our enemy than a 1000 car bombers ever could.
Secondly Paul Bremer with incredible for sight decided to disband the Iraqi Army. That was a brilliant plan fire a bunch of guys who know the terrain, know how to use weapons, explosives and are unemployed. There is a unique cause and effect relationship here. The 1st truely organized insurgent attacks occured after the Iraqi Army was disbanded. So that decision basically gave the insurgents the entire 4th largest army in the world to recruit warriors for. These stupid incompatent decisions continued as Bush, Cheney, Rumsfield, and Rice all refused to believe the facts on the ground. They figured if we ignore the insurgency it will go away, and made BS claims like "The insurgency is in its final throes" etc. A funny thing happened though. The insurgency did not go away in fact it grew stronger, and stronger. Today these errors and strategic miscalculations have paved the way to the stalemate we have in Iraq today.

It's an asymetric war. One side has overwhelming military superiority, the other has fanatical determination. It's impossible to win a war like that - the only thing you can do is keep fighting until the other side loses.

Your on Bang on target. Bush is either stupid or was "lead" into this war by Cheney and in either of the case, he screwed it all up. Millions of the tax payers' money is being wasted. The lives of the American soldiers are lost. The world community is taking serious notice of the wrong doings of the American leaders. And the reputation of America is taking a serious hit.

I seriously hope something is done real fast about it, before its too late.

Because it is hard to fight in a war while trying to remain politically correct. Bureaucracy has no place in war. We have a very powerful military. I mean we took over Iraq in a week's time. Iran who claims they will destroy us if we even think about trying to take them to war couldn't take over Iraq at all in the 4 year Iran/Iraq war.

The reporters need to go away and leave the troops alone and stop with the liberal nonsense. Nine Marines arrested because a reporter interviewed a known terrorist who claimed Marines killed a family with no evidence. Well, terrorists hide behind the civilians anyways because they know we do not want to kill civilians, so they hide behind them and in their houses. Remember back in the early 1990s when we were going to bomb Saddam by taking out his mansion and all of a sudden he allowed his poverty stricken people to come stay in his mansion? Well that wasn't out of kindness that was because they knew we wouldn't bomb then because of all those innocent people. It is insane. If we used our military the way they ought to be used this war would have been over with within the first year of striking. We would have had terrorism taken out of the middle east by now; at least weakened to the point of what the Nazi party is today.

But instead, we are trying to showcase to the world how kind and gentle we are even in war. Now imagine the picture that gives countries like Russia and China. They think of us as weaklings now. They see us arguing about how to conduct a war where they could strike us anytime and we wouldn't be able to do anything about it because we are still trying to figure out how to fight a war without fighting in Iraq.

Think if this was World War 2 and we fought that war as we are now. Hitler would have taken us out with the Nazi Axis in no time and we would all be speaking Deutsch now and/or never been born or dead. Instead it is with the Islamic Terrorists who want to make the whole world followers of their twisted vision of Islam. So instead of German we will be speaking Arabic and learning their customs. All because we are wanting the very enemy we are fighting in this war who want to behead us, slit our throats in the name of Allah and destroy us and the Jews to think of us as peaceful, sensitive, understand nation. INSTEAD OF A STRONG, VIGILANT NATION WHO IS NOT AFRAID TO WIPE OUT A COUNTRY TO MAKE A POINT TO TERRORISM OF DO NOT THREATEN US OR YOU WILL LOSE ANOTHER COUNTRY!

But oh well, World War 2 was the last war we fought the right way.

Why does this war not end? Do you have a hair appointment or something? Is it interupting American Idol or something? War is not a frozen pizza. I say it ends when the Government of IRAN has fallen.

Excuse me? Started over "nothing?" You do remember when we were attacked on 9/11, don't you?
We are fighting al-qaida in Afghanistan and in Iraq. There are two theaters of operation. Just like the pacific and europeon fronts during WWII. It is one war.
It would be great to see this thing end.
But, as Lincoln said, "If fight makes right, then let us to the end dare to do our duty."

I think there are far too many uneducated, barely literate, and intellectually challenged people in this country, who have no concept of what is going on or how our government works.

Some will mature, and become more knowledgeable and less naive over time. Some will not.

Why would he do something to end something so clearly in his favor? The war keeps going because men are still largely in control of politics and they have been making war on eachother since day one.

It never "seems" to end because it has not "in fact" ended.
