By definition, this question can't be answered. If the government KEPT it a secret, no one would know except the people who are in on it. And think about it - would the people who know something that secret leak it in Yahoo Answers?

If I knew the answer it wouldn't be a secret anymore. A secret can only be kept by one person. More than that it is not secret but information with a limited distribution.

The greatest secret the Gov. has not told you is how much time, money and lifes they have wasted on the Shuttle program when we could have had a base on the Moon as well as Mars with the technology we had in the 60's,70's, 80's.

Well when the USA sent satellites into space to detect gamma-rays from the Russian nuclear bombs, they discovered that gamma rays were actually coming from space! They kept this information for a long time until they released this information to the public.
This then launched a whole scientific field, the study and detection of gamma rays.
