If you've got a tampon on it's fine.

Perfectly ok. The best is to wear a tampon for health reasons because you do not want bacteria from the pool getting into your vagina. During our periods, the vaginal opening is more relaxed (larger but just a tad) than other times of the month (sex doesn't count). Because of this chances are higher that if you soak yourself for long periods of time in water (this includes the bathtub), it is more likely bacteria goes up there.

However, I do not agree with one of the above - wearing a pad! This is a definite no-no because pad absorbs water not just blood. So you wouldn't want to leave the pool with a thick wad of cotton wool stuck between your thighs right? It would look really weird.

Of course! Just use a tampon or a menstrual cup and change it like you usually would.
I've been swimming, kayaking, whitewater rafting, sailing... plenty of water sports on my period.
Your life doesn't stop because your period happens.

(... and there's absolutely nothing unsanitary about it, ignore the answer before that suggested that.)

As long as you wear a tampon. Don't wear a pad. I won't work. First the pad will soak up water (and not your blood) and then it might float out of your swimsuit into the pool! Talk about embarrasing!(water DOES NOT stop a period)

most of my friends wear tampons and go swimming, but usually its nearer to the end of their period than to the starting....i personally don't , unless its the very very end...it depends on your period and if you are comfortable with doing tht..

you will need to wear a tampon, but there is no medical reason you can not go swimming.
