Very reliable but a cam belt replacement at every 40,000 instead of the original 60,000 is a costly exercise. Are you a memeber of the AA or RAC they might be able to advise you

The cam-belt on a Vauxhall petrol engine in these cars is 40000 miles.
So you can wait a few more thousand miles before changing it. Vauxhall recommend you change the water pump as well at the same time as the cam-belt.
Price using Vauxhall genuine parts, Cam-belt kit (cam-belt rollers and tensions) about 90 pounds + 2-3 hours labour to replace so the price sounds about right.

P.S The water pump will cost about 40-50 pounds.

I NEVER let my belts go beyond 40k no matter what the book says. if the price quoted includes the tensioner then the price is fair. Also age plays a part too.

Personally I recomend using a non franchised garage you trust to get the work done.

Remember if a belt snaps your looking at a top end rebuild at least. That is a costly exercise.

For piece of mind on that trip i would get it done, you cannot be too sure and at a cam belt break at motor way speeds hmmm does'nt even bear thinking about, i know it is a bit costly but for the piece of mind it is worth it, one question though is the car under a warranty with the dealer? if it is not then shop around but take the average price not always the cheapest one, there are mobile cam belt fitters and as they are moblie they have less overheads ( like roofs and lights, arf arf, sorry!)

vauxhall recommend you change your cambelt every 35k miles, mostly to cover their own backs i think, the autodata book says you need to do it every 3 years or 60000 miles, whichever comes first. if you're at all in doubt get it done, but not by vauxhall. there are many non-franchised, reputable garages about, go to one of them for a price. you'll probably be looking at around £120-150ish depending on the price of the cambelt kit.

Are you having a major repair done? If so change it now, I would suggest you look in your handbook or contact the makers. The AA or RAC may be able to give you an indication. It does seem a bit early. Is there a problem with this model

That's far too early, ask for a second opinion. Are you at a vauxhall garage? It should go at least 60k miles before a change.

If it's an early change, there's no gaurenteeing they'll even do it, it's not something you can just lean under your bonnet and check.

Changing the cam belt after 35,000 miles is a good insurance in case the belt breaks. In which case you would probably be involved in very expensive engine repair, possibly a new engine.

Why does your dealer tell you to change the timing belt, does he know something you dont?
the top limit for a cam belt in this day and age is 80,000 miles

It seems to early to change it, unless there is some other problem that we don't know about. Can you see the belt, and see if it is frayed or cracked?

Unless you can see some physical damage to the belt, you should have a fair amount of life left on it. good luck.
