for the three year old, make her a dollhouse =)
my aunt made that for me and i still love it, its so beautiful and creative. (it also touched my heart in how she carved my name on the side and how she put the details in for me)
for both of them (this is a gift they will cherish as they get older) why dont you make them a scrapbook? put pictures, details you notice about them, etc.
make the boy a clay dinosaur (he can play with as he gets older) get wire and shape it into the dinosaur. cover it with a regular clay to mold it into the shape you want it. when the clay dries, paint the dinosaur.
remember to put detail that wouldve never been included in a regular, boughten gift. make it feel specail to them in a way a barbie or teddy bear wouldnt.
~hope this helps~

My 3 year old brother enjoys bubbles and jewelry (weird, huh?). You can make a bead necklace or bracelet for her, or you could find a small cup with a cap and a bubble wand. Use water and Blue Dawn to make the best bubbles. For the 6 month old, if you know how to sew, grab a few fabrics and make a cute, soft blanket.

for the girl, you can make pretty much anything that has a disney princess. just make sure that it's not a completely finished product. that way when she gets it there is stuff for her to put on or color also. go to the disney website and they have a lot of stuff you can print out.
for the 6 month old, all i can say is maybe knit a stuffed animal if you know how.

we have a place in town where you paint your own pottery. my boys love going there and making piggy banks, etc. And they like getting plates & cups with their names on them.
