Many artists and musicians tend to be liberal. However, interestingly enough, most country musicians are conservative.

Depends on the genre, really. Rock musicians tend to be liberal and socialist in their leanings, while country artists are generally conservative (with a few exceptions on both sides). Actors, esp. those below the age of 60, tend to be liberal. I can't really say about other artistic media.

To say, as some respondents did, that most artists leave their political inclination out of their work is naive in the extreme. We're all political animals (some less than others, but still so), and the art world is no exception. Given the opportunities they have to communicate messages of all types to a large audience, one would have to be blind to not see that a large part of their message is bound to express their individual viewpoints.

How can anyone with half a brain look at performers such as U2, the Dixie Chicks, and Alec Baldwin and say with a straight face that they don't mix politics with their work?

I have worked in newspaper and magazine journalism, with graphic designers, was married to a painter, and ended my career working as a manager in the music business. My judgment is artists and musicians tend to be liberal, but this is not to say that many are conservative. In all cases, they tend to put their art first before politics.

Well they are affiliated with either liberal or conservative, but most of the well-known, high-profile, and the respected ones are liberal.

This artist leans liberal on some issues, conservative on others.

Occupation should not be the "indicator" of one's political leanings, or vice versa.

Since artitsts and other creative people are generally sensitive to the circumstances of other people and educated--liberal.

If you insist on those labels, that is. What you actually see is, in most creative people, is a profound sense of connection to and empathy for their fellow human beings. That transcends political boundaries--but it almost always leads them to take positions that extrimists on the right regard as "liberal."
