My friend has a few pans that seem to be cast iron but feel light weight, unlike cast iron. We are trying to find out what they really are and who made them, his grandmother gave them to him years ago. I am also wanting to find out when they were made, anything about them that I can.

Cast iron is heavy. I never heard of light cast iron. Are you sure it isn't teflon?

"Light" is a relative term. Newer cast iron pans can be lighter than the older ones because they are thinner. I doubt the pans your friend has are cast iron if they are light. They may be cast aluminum or steel pans.

I would bet they're aluminum. My mom has a big round roasting/stew pot I love. I found an oval roaster very similar to it at a yard sale years ago. It's really a great pot. It's a lot like the one in the eBay listing in sources below (not my listing or anyone I know, by the way - just looked like my pan). The other source talks about all the types of metal for pots and pans and is a good description of each.
