This is the way it's happened for me the 2 times I've done it.

The first day of a positive ovulation test you call and make an appointment to go in for AI. They will have you come in and do a blood test to check your estrogen level, then an ultrasound to make sure you have a mature follicle. Then your husband/partner will give a "donation". They will then take it and "wash" it to get the best of the best, strongest sperm to inseminate you with. About an hour later, you will do the AI.

The procedure for the AI is to insert a speculum, then insert a catheter (just a very thin tube) in through the speculum into your cervix or uterus - depending on how much they need to bypass. The sperm "sample" is pulled into a syringe, then pushed in through the catheter.

The procedure of inserting takes less than a 1/2 hour, including the time to lay flat on your back for 10 - 15 minutes.

It is painless, unless you are like me and have cramps as soon as a speculum is inserted! But it's minor cramps!

I am on my second one, the first one didn't work, we're hoping this one does. It's pretty much like having sex and hoping it works! My mucus is "hostile" and it won't work naturally for us, so this is the only method we have...short of Invetro - our insurance doesn't cover that though! I get six attempts at AI through my insurance and we are hoping that will cover 2 children!!

Good luck to you!!!

It depends on the method. For a simple semen injection it could be hit or miss and take a few times. If its the version where they remove the eggs, fertalize them then reinsert them then theres a good chance that you have the procedure only once.
