Joe = J
James = A

J = 10 + A
2(J + 8) = 3(A + 8)
2J + 16 = 3A + 24
2(10 + A) + 16 = 3A + 24
20 + 2A + 16 = 3A + 24
36 + 2A = 3A + 24
12 = A
22 = J
Joe is 22, James is 12

James = x, Joe = x + 10

In eight years: 3(x + 8) = 2(x + 18)

x = 12 = James age; Joe is 22

Proof: 12 + 8 = 20, x 3 = 60
22 + 8 = 30, x 2 = 60

If you let
x = joe's age
y = james' age

If joe is 10 years older than james, then
x = y + 10

and if in 8 years, twice joe's age will be 3 times james' age,
2(x + 8) = 3 (y + 8)
(multiply out, and solve for a variable)
2x + 16 = 3y + 24
2x = 3y + 8
x = 3/2 y + 4

(plug this in to the first equation, solve for y)
1.5y + 4 = y + 10
.5y = 6
y = 3

x = 13
