According to the Encarta dictionary, it is an "18th Century Sanskrit word meaning 'descent', referring to the descent of a god to earth". It's also used by members of the Hindu faith to refer to the different manifestations of Vishnu.

I believe it orginiated from the Hindu tradition to refer to bodily manifistation of a god in the tradition.
It also is a cartoon, exists in Role Playing, novels, fantasy fiction, etc.
