Guthrie Govan is the best playing and one of the most diversified guitarists today, by a mile. Guthrie equals or surpasses the picking chops of Paul Gilbert, the legato of Allan Holdsworth, Steve Vai's tapping, the nuance and vibrato of Hendrix, and the phrasing of Shawn lane.

If you're looking for most important to this era, John Petrucci is having more impact right now to the young players than any other virtuoso guitarist.

Ooooh - good one. I love Pablo Gilberto, Vai and Satch.

The thing about PG is his sense of humour (Vai had one before he became an arrogant b*****d) - his website is hilarious and says a lot about the man.

Honorable mentions to Shawn Lane, Nuno and Petrucci. I like old Yngwie but he doesn't seem to have evolved in the last fifteen years which is a shame.

Best? Roy Clark! Yes, I know he was on Hee Haw and is country and all, but open your mind a little to a different genre. I've never heard anyone rip so cleanly up and down the fretboard. He played clean so he couldn't get away with anything like you can with a Marshal amp cranked up to ten. He didn't play my kind of music, but played from the gut and did it with a smile on his face and I can appreciate that.

I saw Michael Angelo Batio at a music store gig and I have to say he is amazing. His style isn't my favorite but I think he is the fastest known guitarist in the world.

I think Gilbert could play circle around any of those guys, but the main thing is, he can also play with soul and not just shred on every song.
