Since by convention, there are 100 cms in a meter (the Greek word "centi" means a hundred) and that there are
2.54 cms to an inch, we can therefore compute the number of inches in a meter by dividing 100 cms/2.54 and come up with the answer 39.37.

The method I just used to come up with the answer is called "remembering the basics". With such knowledge, you can convert from one measurement medium to another. To illustrate, if we want to know the number of centimeters in a yard, then by knowing the "basics" that a yard has 3 feet or 36 inches, then we just multiply 36 by 2.54 and come up with 91.44 cms. See, we got to what we needed without going to a conversion table?

I hope I "measured" up to your needs or questions. You have a great day!
