You're right, but they win because they can spend the most $ on advertisements that portray their opponents in a bad light. And they can tour the country more and afford more spin doctors.

A small correction is in order. It's the candidate that raises the most amount of money that usually wins. And they're raising that kind of money because they have a lot of support, because of their abilities and beliefs, which then translates into a lot of votes.
There are a lot of people in America that think you can buy an election. It takes a lot of money, but you do need to convince a whole bunch of people to vote for you, and you do that by giving them reasons to vote for you.

That's a good question. However, people usually learn about the candidates through publicity, and it's for that very reason that the candidates who can afford the best PR staff are normally the ones who win.

Ability to do the job is great, but our campaigns and elections are more about marketing and sound bites. Yes, it's a shallow way to pick leadership but it hasn't changed in almost 70 years, since the widespread use of radio.
But to run an effective campaign (ie get elected) you need the dollars.

Because money talks and Bullshit walks.
Sorry for the cliche, but in this case it works well.
Of course a president should be chosen on his experience and abilities. However, as long people are swayed by the almighty dollar, thats the way it will be.

Money talks. A very good book that explains a great deal anent this is "The Assault on Reason", by Al Gore. Whether you're a fan of his or not is moot as this book describes and explains the very dilemma you're concerned with. Even if you don't care for his politics this book will generate thought.

I agree, but, as the saying goes: Money Talks.
And people are dumb enough to listen to that instead of their common sense.

because real choice is a critical element that is missing from out election process.
if you are not either wealthy or very well funded by corporations, you have zero percent chance of running for president.
