Simple. Lack of ambition/will or, at one point, they were utterly discouraged by some unforeseen circumstance. Regardless, mediocrity is a rather subjective term. What one may consider inferior or mediocre others may be content and even satisfied with. (Not everyone wants to be on top.) Of course, most people (those who, in fact, settle for what you deem as "mediocre") will see your view as "elitist" or even greed-filled. Any path one may choose will have its downsides.

To truly set one's life toward accomplishing a higher purpose means that one must accept change, and owing to many factors, primarily the narrowness of our nature, we would rather be ruined than changed. As such, banality and mediocrity seems a much more painless fate.

Because mediocrity is stable. Generally, trying to increase wealth is a risk, and as such there is a chance, that by trying, you may loose what you already have. So most people take the safest option, they do not choose to gamble their current comfortable status for something that may mean they loose out.

Why call it "mediocrity?" Why must it be a pejorative connotation?

Perhaps SOME people are just not that "driven" career-wise or financially.

I remember a former boss of mine who was so "driven" that he set the bar so high for himself there was NO WAY he was going to achieve the "goals" he had set. Result: he had this mid-life crisis meltdown...

Some of us are just content to "take care of business" on a day-by-day basis; doing our jobs, loving our families, and not having to take Prilosec for gastric reflux cause were so "driven."

What makes you think people settle, or even have a choice in the matter?

You must be young and foolish if you think life will unfold the way you want it too.

It doesn't do that even for the rich and famous....

Besides, sometimes, you have responsibilities which are greater than your own needs (children) and it takes a lot of selflessness and compassion to put others ahead of your own needs.

Frankly thats a hero to me, not someone mediocre.
