Several reports out today claim that inequality now is much worse than 20 or 30 years ago. One tool that the government hoped would tackle the opportunity gap - SureStart - also came in for criticism. MPs said it was failing to target those who most need it. So what is the government doing to tackle the problem

Figures from the National Audit Office show that the gap beween rich and poor has widened during last ten years.

At the moment they are carrying on with what they were doing before, but they'll probably annonce some new measures soon. I think that they have an up-hill battle, especially as it's now easy to work only 16 hours a week, and still get a free council house and benefits, even though you could work more, and could earn enough money to be above the poverty line. Councils actively encourage people to work less hours so they can get free housing etc. so how is the government going to tackle this mindset of many people in poorer areas that it is easier to not try, and to just suck money out of the state.

The gap between me and money grows ever wider. The government is taking measures. Okay, there's more to be done but things are moving forward. When the other lot were in power snore.

Nothing. I enquired about it for my son and decided it was just more government spin.
