Because there are no large external bodies with gravities to affect it. The sun (Sol) is affected by the gravitational rotation of the Milky Way galaxy which our sun is a part of. The sun takes about 226 million years to revolve around the Milky Way. Also, all galaxies including our Milky Way are travelling through space outward from the Big Bang. Some stars are affected by other stars as galaxies sometimes collide. And binary star systems (with two suns instead of one) are quite common. A star's path could also be affected by a black hole's gravity. None of which should happen to our sun since it's neighbors are too far away. Our sun will just grow old and die in about 5 billion years. Besides travelling through space, our sun also rotates like the Earth does once every 24 hours. However, the sun takes about 600 hours to rotate once.

It is not that he sun stays up in the sky, it is that the earth keeps rotating around the sun. The gravity of the sun keeps us in orbit. Our revolving on our axis is what gives the effect of day and night as different parts of the earth face the sun.

The sun can be considered "stationary" while the earth rotates its axis and orbits the sun.
It all comes down to gravity and our earth rotating about it's axis.
