My step-son has chosen not to go on vacation with the family due to him just starting a new job and not wanting to loose it. We are letting him stay at home by himself for a week. What do you think are some good guidelines (not rules, if I say rules he feels like a baby) for which he should obide by? So far he's not allowed to have friends over past 12am, not allowed to stay over at someone's more than one night, meaning he has to at least spend a night at home every other nite, and calling every nite to confirm he's still alive and kicking. We have some friends keeping an eye on the house if they see anything suspious they are going to call us. But he is a responsible young man and hasn't ever caused problems, so we're not worried. Is there anything I'm missing? Advice would be great! Thanks.

You know your child best. These seem like good guidelines to me but are you comfortable with them? Examine how you & your partner feel about his ability to be responsible and dependable. If you feel he is ready then he was probably ready already...we as parents seem to give less responsibility to our children as they get older out of fear when in fact we should be giving them more & more responsibility. He's old enough to live on his own so 1 week at home alone should be a breeze. If you feel that you need to put more restrictions on him try to make sure they are things that are only for his own safety or he might be offended.

Main thing is no parties, your son is a young adult not a child. Let him know you want him to spend at least every other night at home to make your home look as though someone is around, home burgleries do happen. It's how you phrase things like that which will get your son to agree etc. Young women are nothing to be any more concerned about if you where home or not, a young man his age will make his own choices in regards to women. He should be smart enough to use protection etc. No parties is the number 1 thing though. Remind him to get the mail and newspapers in etc. if he does get them usually.

no girls over is one id do.... (teen pregnancy is on the rise)

have 1st aid kit available
fire safety
check all alarm systems and smoke detectors before you leave.
lock the doors (alot of ppl break in while your on vacation.)
id limit the amount of friends over or your house could turn into a open house party (even if he didn't invite them friends friends tend to gossip...)

have a good vacation

Just making sure that he knows that there are people who will be stopping by and checking things out. If he is really a good kid, this will keep him from doing anything major.

Just set some rules. But you know he might break them so hopefully you can trust him. Just make sure he calls you and everything might be alright, but sometimes call him so that way if he is doing something you might hear it in the background. I wouldn't say no girls though.
