If you don't want google to amass all of your searches, then use FireFox and download the CustomizeGoogle add-on. This will generate a new google cookie each time you start FireFox.
After you downloaded and installed CustomizeGoogle, go to Tools->Add-ons. Then select Options from CustomGoogle. Click on 'Privacy'. Check both check boxes.
You will still have previous searches in the search bar, but there's no easy way to delete them all. The only way I know how to erase them is to type each character one at a time into the search bar then press Shift-Delete. In other words, press 'a' in the search bar. All searches starting with 'a' will appear in a drop down box. On the drop down box, press 'Shift-Delete' keys for each entry. Then do 'b' and so on.
Yes, it's a drag and I rarely do it since no one looks at my computer anyway.

It's simple
Open up the google website or search bar
and double click the part where you usually type
A list of your previous searches should show.
Using the arrow keys, go down and only highlight the search(s) you want to remove, one you have highlighted the search press the delete button on your keyboard
(Note: when I say the "delete" button I don't mean backspace)

You can remove local evidence from your PC, however Google servers keep your history for some time, and they will hand over details to anyone they see fit (as a number of individuals currently imprisoned in China discovered, to their cost).
To avoid being 'tracked' by Google, use 'scroogle' instead (this has the advantage that google 'ads' are removed from your search results)

When you log into Google, there is a link on the top right that says "Web History". Go there and then delete your search history.

Search under someone elses login. Then you don't have to worry about it, or clear the search history in the google search dropdown.

If you have Internet Explorer, clear the history.
If Mozilla, just press Tools>Clear Private Data.
Or you can turn Autocomplete off in Explorer, and press delete when you have Firefox, press the delete button on your keypad for the drop-down box.
