Long runs using cheap extension cords will cause a voltage drop, the motor will overheat if this happens.

Long cords will cause low voltage. Increase the size of the wiring and see if it still cuts off. If so, the intake to the motor could be clogged with dirt or insects and the motor has an internal switch that cuts the motor off until it cools. If this switch is bad, some motor shops can change it out. Otherwise you could have to change the motor out.

You can buy 8guage extension cords at most DIY'er places. Too long of a run, on to skinny of a wire, makes the voltage drop. The motor would then try to pull more from the plug then the cord can provide. If your lucky, just the breaker will flip.

Swiming pumps should not be powered by portable cords (extension cords) even it they are sized correctly. Portable cords are for temporary use only.

The pump should have a permanently wired GFCI receptacle on a separate circuit. This would elimate the voltage drop and give you ground fault protection as well.

Everybody so far is correct. If a good cord doesnt work, then the motor is defunct. http://appliancequickfix.com/ has a great and important page on pool water.
