Yeah it's illegal but it is cash so you could keep it and no one would be the wiser. Personally, I would turn it in though...call me a sucker but that is just who I am.

I actually found $500 cash one time in the parking lot of the mall. Just 5 - $100 bills folded in half. I kept the money. Looking back, if I would have turned it in to the mall security office, they might have found the rightfull owner if someone came looking for $500 cash that they lost. Or, they might have just kept it for themselves, and said someone had claimed it.

It should be taken to the authorities, usually the police. If it is not claimed in a certain number of days, they notify you and you can claim it. Most of the time you will claim it because generally no one can prove it is actually theirs. If they have a teller receipt for that day for that amount it can be claimed but that is a definite rarity.

Sometimes they find traces of illegal drugs on the bills and they keep it for evidence. If this happens you will be called in for fingerprinting to clear your prints.

Life gets interesting, huh!?! I, too, have found purses and wallets and returned them.

Unless there was a name and address, I would say not.I once found $100 just lying in the street with no identification. How is there any way of knowing who it belongs to, unless you see someone freaking out near by and crying?

No the law states that you have to turn it into the authorities. The rightful owner has a given amount of time, I'm not sure how long, to claim their lost money. If it is not claimed in the set time frame, it becomes yours.

Yes. It is still illegal. Doesn't mean you'll get caught, but if you do, you could get arrested for theft. Because you could argue that you were on your way to take it to the police department or something, you probably would not get arrested unless you spent it, but the fact remains it is still stealing to take money that does not belong to you.

i have found a hundred, forty, and several times a twenty, and have not ever been questioned by authorities, so i guess it was legal, huh. i have also found a few wallets and returned them. i believe there is a law of ethics to return such a find if the owner is identifiable.
