I had 1 baby natural and 3 with an epidural. I would never go natural again. I couldn't see going through all that pain if I didn't have to.I enjoyed the the births of my children so much more. I was able to control my pushing better. I tore with my first child(natural) The down side of an epidural for me was I itched the next day. With one of my pregnancies the epidural quit working at the end. I went from 4 to 10 cm in 45 min. The epidural was not enough to control the pain. They used a different drug in my back and it worked just fine. With that pregnancy I was on percocet every 2 hours for a surgery I had to have. I think I was so used to pain killers that they didn't do much for me. Ultimately the choice is yours. Good luck to you and your baby!

With my first child I didn't have an epidural. I definetly don't regret it. But my second child was bigger and the labor was longer so I had pain meds throught the iv. My most recent had to be a c-section delivery. I think it is great for women to try for a natural birth. But if you feel that you need it, then have the epidural it does not make your accomplishment seem any less. Giving birth is an amazing experience.

4 babies and no epidurals. 2 of my labors started naturally and 2 were induced. The 2 natural ones were much easier. One of them I had no pain relief because there wasn't enough time. The other (my 1st) I was only given something to help me relax between contractions. Of the two induced labors, the first one was really hard and long. I was given quite a bit of the same drug ot help me relax. I don't think I relaxed any (from what dh tells me) but it affected my memory of the whole experience quite a bit. The other induced labor got hard near the end and I was given enough pain relief that my son was born asleep.
My suggestion to you if you want a natural labor is to forgo induction and study up on natural birth. Good Luck!

Lisa, I tried to not have the epidural the second time that I was in Labor, but I failed. The contractions were much worse and they were much harder and I couldn't bare it any longer, so my husband and I agreed that an epidural would be less stressful on me and the baby. I got another epidural. And omg it was like I went to heaven. I love epidurals!!!!!

It might depend more on your condition during labor. I wanted a natural birth too, but after 22 hours of contractions, I begged for the epidural.

I had one, but everything was going so fast. I became numb only on the right side, so my left side was taking all the pain. It was excruciating. I am sure if the epidural had a chance to kick in, it would have been fine. But that epidural was crazy from the get-go. The dr. had to poke me two or three times...Drove me nuts. I was flipping out after that...lol. I also had this drug stadol (sp?) That really took the edge off and put me to sleep for a while.

I have had four kids with no epidural or other pain killers. My labors were 19, 15, 11, and 33 hours long. I used the Bradley method with all of mine. It really works. I have had lots of other kinds of pain that were lots worse. Check out the Bradley method. Look for the book Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way.

I had one 1 w/ all four of my boys. I would highly recommend doing it. My first was great...I didn't feel a thing...WONDERFUL. :) The after part was still painful...but the other 3 I still had one and they weren't as strong...and it was still painful w/ an epidural...so I can't imagine giving birth w/out one. If I had no choice well then...nothing I can do about that...but if you can choose to have less pain...then why the hell not get the epidural? :) Good luck w/ whatever you choose!

That's what we said, but I just couldn't take the pain. I'm glad I did it, specially with my first baby, I was in labor for over 24 hrs. and now, just the thought of having pain for such a long amount of time, gives me chills.
My second baby came much faster, I'm sure yours will too, I was in labor only 6 hrs. and pushed 3 times, I did get an epidural but it didn't come into full effect since the baby came so fast, but it did help.
My mother had one baby completely natural, and she told me that it was the worst pain she had ever felt, that she wouldn't wish that on anybody.
Good luck! I hope everything comes out great!
Congratulations! God bless!

I was given Staydol through IV with both my deliveries. It was just enough to take the edge off the contractions, but they were still very painful. I am seriously considering an epidural this time. My sister just had her 5th baby and it was the first time she had an epidural. She told me to get one.
