The shouldn't hurt. The fact that they hurt you probably means you aren't relaxed enough while the doctor is doing his/her exam. Next time you go in for a pelvic or a pap smear try to keep your mind focused on something other than the exam yourself. Some women like to take a magazine in with them so they can read something to keep their mind off of what the doctor is doing, some like to file their nails. Do something like that, read, file nails, play a game on your cell phone(if it can be on in their office), text message a friend(again if your phone can be on in the office). Any one of those should help you relax by keeping your mind off what the doctor is doing, and before you know it, you'll be finished. Hope this helps. :-)

because the doctor is not the one with his legs in stirrups. i know every time i go for a pap smear it hurts so bad so i started seeing a female doctor and she is much more gentler.

If you don't relax your entire body to allow your vaginal muscles to relax, then it will hurt.

Paps can be uncomfortable, so just think happy thoughts.

Pap smear does not hurt! Only the intromission of something in your vagina can hurt.

your OBGYN is scraping (essentially scratching) your cervix... your cervix is extremely sensitive and when your doctor bumps it and/or scrapes it... it gives the sensation of a menstrual cramp sort of.

They only hurt if you don't relax.
