and behold, in the Netscape news today....an article now exists about .....if trees could grow on a heated-up Mars. Experiments are taking place in Mexico. So, does anyone out there think this is also bolderdash? I mean...ridiculous thinking..or....is it realistic? Also, does anyone know how to stay alive for another 100 years, ha, I wouldn't sticking around to see if growing trees on mars to sustain oxygen dependent creatures succeeded. thanks

I'm not sure that, even with trees to provide oxygen, Mars could sustain an atmosphere indefinitely. Present theories are that Mars had a much more substantial atmosphere in its past, but because it does not have sufficient gravity or a magnetic field, the solar wind stripped it of its atmosphere early on in the devlopment of the solar system. Any attempts to reconstitute an atmosphere there would be doomed to the same fate.

its imposibal fisrtly mars weather is to spontaious it changes to much at day its 80 degrees and at night it -100 tree from earth wont servive in climents like that and plus you have the no water factor and the hundred mph sandstorms and then also gama and uv radiation poring down apon the suface and an unpereized atpmosphere so unles it grew in a plastic bag on a spaceship it will never happen ever

in mars' current condition, no known form of life can survive on its surface. Not only is it to hot, but there is not enough carbon dioxide to support plant life at all. What these scientists are probably trying to do is create almost a man made, contained atmosphere, they would then put trees in this 'bubble' to oxygenate it for other life.
