As far as the easiest and maintenance free that would be a philodendron ivy. These Ivies are very hard to kill. Other Philos are just as easy. I would stay away from Orchids, Gardenias, and even African violets because they are pretty fussy about light and moisture requirements.

I think the type of orchids that are usually sold in a garden store are one of the best. They bloom for a long time and usually aren't too expensive-so just replace when it's done.
