What can be done to prevent this? I notice it hardly ever happens with disks that I own. So somebody is damaging the ones that come from the movie rental store.

Older films - like Gone with the Wind - have an intermission in the middle of the movie, though it sounds to me like you are jsut getting damaged/scratched dvd's from the video store.

It's because they are scratched, much like a CD when it skips or stops playing. When this happens for me, I take it out and wipe it down with rubbing alcohol (I do this to my CDs too) and it works. Make sure it dries before popping it back in or it will just turn and turn. It has to be dry.
