It's like despersdorjj1 says. Our European players needed a break and some of our MLS players like Donovan wanted to get back to the Galaxy, and return to their MLS clubs. It's not easy for a country to play in back to back tournaments like that and it's not something the US is used to doing.
I also don't think you can fairly say that Copa America is more important than the Gold Cup because both are regional tournaments, not international tournaments. Naturally the US is going to think that the Gold Cup is more important because it is CONCACAF tournament and the US is part of that region. It's true that the US wasn't going to and didn't help it's reputation by sending the squad that it did to Copa America but we has our reasons for doing that as I mentioned.
The US decided that it would send it's best young and inexperienced up and comers down there lead by some of our veteran players to get them some good and much needed experience. We are trying to develop a team for 2010 as at least some of these players that played in Copa America could likely be on the US National Team in 2010. We are just more concerned with future development than anything else. This is why we sent the lineup that we did to Copa America.

The squad at the copa america was an experimental team. Pretty much everyone who starred for them against argentina got thier first cap execpt eddie johnson and some others. I don't why they would do that for the copa america when the gold cup isn't that important as the copa america. The US squad ended up being the worst team in copa america.

It was at the request of most of the players. Landon Donovan for one wanted to get back to the Galaxy so he can train with Beckham as some the others wanted to get back to their teams.
The Euro guys wanted to go on vacation having sense most of the team had finish their seasons and wanted a break.
To the USSF they feel the Gold Cup is more important to them sense it is the championship for the region.
But we did take a hit in the image department.

i'm assuming bob bradley wanted maximum exposure for some younger, inexperienced players, seeing as how the world cup is three years away... half of the last world cup team will be in their mid to late 30s when 2010 rolls around... including some of the current regulars - brian ching, carlos bocanegra, tim howard, etc...

I think because they knew they didn't have a chance any way, so preferred to give experience to young players. By the way, USA is progressing very well; Won't be long before they will field a very competitive team.

the gold cup is more easy to win ,so he put all his eggs in that basket, he thought "there no chances to win copa America any way"
an he's right.
but the only way to improve in the game is playing against betters teams.
Mexico bring there best ,so there's no excuse that they need it rest.
